Advice for Republican politicians: If your answer to the question, “How do I get elected?’ boils down to ‘Pretend to be a Democrat,’ please change your party affiliation to one that accepts lying in order to win elections.
The bottom line is that the people will elect the government they want, and get the one they deserve. If conservatives have to pretend to be liberals in order to get elected, then conservatism has already lost regardless of the party affiliation of the butt in the chair. And it may very well be true that the liberals are correct and conservatism/libertarianism is finished as a political force in America.
That does not mean they are correct in thinking that progressivism is the best course forward for America; far from it. History is filled with examples of countries where the dominant political philosophy led them into stagnation and decay. Greece, the birthplace of democracy rotted from within, as did its successor, the Roman Empire.
But the bottom line is this: if winning is more important than your ideals, then don’t sully the ideals be using them as empty campaign promises. Run on your principles, not your polling.
