Two different sales models.

Gillette highlights the worst that men do, says it describes all of us, and hectors us to “do better”, ignoring the fact that most of us are already doing better than the examples laid out in the ad. It’s designed to make us feel that we lack something and must change our basic nature in order to be accepted.

Egard shows us at out best, and says that can describe all of us if we try. Rather than bringing men down, it raises us up and celebrates the strength, courage, honor, and decency that men strive for.

Gillette’s message comes from a place of fear and loathing; it tries to shame us into change. Egard’s comes from a place of love and acceptance; it inspires us to reach higher.

Which do you think is the more effective message? As a friend of mine said, “I’d rather try to live up to something than live something down.”
